How to make a barcode

  1. 01

    Pick the type

Code 128 for your own SKUs and any text, EAN-13 or UPC-A for retail product numbers, ITF-14 for cartons.

  2. 02

    Type the number

For EAN and UPC, leave off the last digit and the check digit is worked out for you, or type it and it is checked.

  3. 03

    Download and print

SVG stays sharp at any size for design apps and label software; PNG is drawn large for everything else.

Good to know

  • A barcode only draws a number. EAN and UPC numbers for selling in shops come from GS1, and shops and marketplaces often check that the number is registered to your company.
  • For your own stock, shelves or events, Code 128 needs no registration: use any SKU or text.
  • Print in black on white and keep the white space either side of the bars: scanners need it to find the code.
  • Test a printed label with a scanner or a phone barcode app before printing hundreds.

Questions people ask

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The barcode is drawn by your browser on your own device.

Can I make my own UPC or EAN number?

You can draw any number, but a made-up retail number may belong to someone else's product. To sell through shops or marketplaces, get numbers from GS1 for your country, then make the barcodes here.

Which barcode should I use for inventory?

Code 128. It holds letters, numbers and symbols in a compact code that every modern scanner reads.

What's the difference between a barcode and a QR code?

A barcode holds a short number or code in one row of bars. A QR code holds much more, such as a link or contact card, and is read by phone cameras. Use our QR code generator for those.
