Change image DPI to 300 (or any DPI)

Set a JPG or PNG to 300 DPI, or 72, 96, 150 or 600, without changing a single pixel. You see each image's current DPI and the print size it gives before you download.

How to change an image to 300 DPI

  1. 01

    Keep 300 selected

Or pick 72, 96, 150 or 600 if your printer or form asks for that.

  2. 02

    Choose your images

Each one shows its pixel size, its DPI now and how big it prints at the new DPI.

  3. 03

    Download

Save each image, or all of them in one ZIP file.

What DPI does, and what it doesn't

  • DPI tells a printer how many pixels to put in each inch. The same 1800 × 1200 px photo prints at 6 × 4 in at 300 DPI, and at 3 × 2 in at 600 DPI.
  • Changing DPI doesn't add detail. If a photo is too small for the print you want at 300 DPI, it needs more pixels, not a different number.
  • Screens ignore DPI, so the image looks exactly the same on websites and phones.
  • A JPG can store DPI in two places (the JFIF header and EXIF). Both are set, so Photoshop, Windows and macOS all read the new value.

Questions people ask

How do I change an image to 300 DPI?

Keep 300 selected, choose the image and download it. Only the DPI setting in the file changes, so the pixels and the quality stay exactly the same.

Does changing DPI reduce image quality?

No. The picture data is copied byte for byte; only the resolution setting is rewritten. The file size changes by a few bytes at most.

How many pixels do I need for a 300 DPI print?

Multiply the print size in inches by 300. A 4 × 6 in print needs 1200 × 1800 px, an 8 × 10 in print 2400 × 3000 px, and an A4 page about 2480 × 3508 px.

Why does my image say 72 DPI?

Phones and many apps save 72 DPI as a default label. It says nothing about quality: what matters for printing is the pixel size.

How do I check an image's DPI?

Add the image here. The tool shows its current DPI and pixel size straight away, and changes nothing until you download.
