- Stand in front of a plain, light wall in even daylight.
- Ask someone to take it from about 4 ft (1.2 m) away, at face height.
- Look straight at the camera. Take off glasses and hats.

How to check a passport photo
- 01
Pick the country and document
Each document has its own size, head height and background colour, so the checks change with it.
- 02
Choose your finished photo
Use the exact file you plan to submit, already cropped. The checker measures it as it is and doesn't crop it again.
- 03
Read the checks
Green rows meet the published rule. Amber and red rows say what to fix. Download a check report if you want a record.
What it checks, and what it can't
- Head height and position, eyes open, a neutral expression, glasses, head turn, lighting, background colour and resolution.
- The measurements come from a face model running on your device. They are a careful estimate, not the passport office's own check.
- If a check fails, retaking the photo against a plain wall usually fixes it. The photo maker on each country page crops a new one for you.
Questions people ask
Is my photo uploaded to check it?
No. The face model downloads once and runs in your browser, so the photo stays on your device.
My photo passed here. Will it be accepted?
Nobody but the passport or visa office can promise that. Passing here means it meets the published size and position rules we can measure.
Why does the background check say to retake for US photos?
The US Department of State rejects edited photos, so painting the background isn't an option for US documents. A photo taken against a plain white wall is the fix.
Can I print the photo after checking it?
Yes. Continue to download, then get the 4 × 6 in print sheet, or use the print sheet tool for other paper sizes.
