How to convert an Excel contact list to VCF
- 01
Choose the Excel file
Put the contacts on the first sheet, with column names such as Name, Mobile and Email in row 1.
- 02
Check the columns
Each column shows an example and what it becomes; change any that are wrong.
- 03
Pick the options and download
Add your country code to numbers without one, and combine duplicates if the sheet has any.
Good to know
- Only the first sheet is read. If your contacts are on another tab, move that tab to the front.
- Excel removes the leading 0 from phone numbers stored as numbers. Choosing India +91 or Nepal +977 adds the country code, so those numbers dial correctly. Numbers that already start with + are not changed.
- Birthdays stored as Excel dates come out as dates, such as 1990-01-31.
- Formulas are read as the value Excel last saved.
- Old .xls files (Excel 97–2003) can't be read. Open them in Excel and save as .xlsx or CSV UTF-8.
Questions people ask
How do I convert an Excel contact list to VCF?
Choose the .xlsx file here, check each column is matched to the right field, and download the VCF. Then open that file on your phone or import it in Google Contacts.
Do I need to save the sheet as CSV first?
No. The .xlsx file is read directly. A CSV works too, if that is what you have.
Why are my phone numbers missing their first 0?
Excel drops leading zeros from cells formatted as numbers. Choose India +91 or Nepal +977 and numbers of the usual length get the country code, which makes them dial correctly again.
Are my contacts uploaded?
No. The file is read by your browser on your own device. Contact lists are personal data, so nothing is sent anywhere.
Can I use a Google Sheet?
Yes. In Google Sheets, use File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) or CSV, then choose that file here.
