How to get an Indonesia SIM photo that passes

Take the photo
Stand about 2 ft (60 cm) in front of a plain, light wall. Ask someone to take the photo from about 4 ft (1.2 m) away with the camera at face height. Use daylight from a window in front of you, not overhead light. Take off your glasses, keep both eyes open and your mouth closed.

Check the crop
The tool finds your face, sizes your head and checks the background. It doesn't change the background, because edited photos are rejected. If a check turns amber or red, drag or zoom until it turns green.

Download the digital photo for online forms, or the 4 × 6 in sheet to print at a photo kiosk. Print at actual size and cut along the grey lines.

What photo does SIM online renewal need?
Korlantas Polri's SINAR asks for a recent photo on a blue background, 480 × 640 pixels, as a JPEG, JPG or PNG of at most 100 KB. This page makes that file.
Can I edit the background to blue?
No. SINAR asks for a real blue background that hasn't been edited (background asli, tidak diedit). Stand in front of a blue wall or cloth; this tool checks the background but doesn't repaint it.
Why is my SIM online photo rejected?
Korlantas says photo quality is the main reason applications are rejected. Common causes: an edited or non-blue background, glasses or lenses, a blue hijab, showing teeth, a blurry photo, or a photo of a printed photo.
Can I wear a hijab?
Yes, but not a blue one, so it stands out from the blue background. Hats and other head coverings aren't allowed.
Do I need a photo at the Satpas office?
No. At a Satpas office the photo is taken on site. The 480 × 640 px file is only for online renewal through SINAR.
Is my photo uploaded to Free Photo Desk?
No. The photo is processed in your browser on your own device and never leaves it. You upload it yourself, in the SINAR app.
